Program
The program in Viña del Mar offers a unique combination of opportunities for pursuing a study abroad experience. It offers students the opportunity to complete their language requirement and earn general education credits. It also offers the advanced learner the opportunity to pursue work in upper division Spanish classes and advance on work toward their major or minor in Spanish. The academic program is designed to accommodate the needs, interests and qualifications of the individual students while taking advantage of the environment to increase students' facility in Spanish language and heighten their awareness of Spanish culture.

Students will enroll for between 6 and eleven credits based upon their level of Spanish proficiency, their need for general education credits and other factors. Course offerings are subject to sufficient enrollment. Acceptance into the program will be based on academic standing and approval by the Director of Overseas Studies for the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, Professor Andrea Pope, and the Program Director, Professor Martinez-Sotelo . Each student will be interviewed by Professor Pope, who will also verify the student's selection of classes. Classes
will be held Monday through Thursday on the campus of the Universidad de Viña
del Mar. This will allow students ample time for individual travel. Several
group excursions are also planned including an exciting vistit to Buenos Aires,
Argentina.
Location
Viña del Mar and Varlparaiso, Chile are two linked cities with a total population approaching 1,300,000. They are located some sixty five miles from Santiago, Chile's capital. Valparaiso is Chile's main port and has been declared an International Heritage City by UNESCO. Viña del Mar, founded in 1874, is the most famous and important resort-city on South America's Pacific coast. Valparaiso and Viña offer the cultural opportunities of a bustling metropolitan region and the tranquility of a stable social environment that will provide students with an ideal atmospher for their studies of Spanish and Latin American Culture. The average winter temperature is sixty degrees La Universidad Viña del Mar was founded in 1988 and has rapidly become one of Chile's most prestigious private institutions of higher education. Its main campus, where students participating in the program will study, offers modern facilities similar to those on the University of Arizona campus.
Program Director
The Program Director is Professor Martinez-Sotelo . Instruction will be provided by Professor Martinez-Sotelo and by the faculty of the Universidad de Viña del Mar.
Housing Information
Students will be housed with chilean families
in Viña del
Mar. Each student will have a private room, internet provided, laundry
service and three meals per day. All housing services are included in the
program
cost.
Program costs
Program costs are approximately $9,000. This includes all academic
fees and full room and board but does not include airfare. Students are
responsible for arranging their own transportation to and from Chile.
Participants pay
all fees at Study Abroad and Student Exchange. Some additional money will
be needed for personal expenses and for the purchase of textbooks. Program
price,
dates and arrangements may be subject to change due to unexpected circumstances.
Requirements
To enroll in the program the student must meet the following requirements.
- A cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 (On a 4.0 scale)
- Enrollment in at least 12 units
- Two letters of recommendation
- Interview with the Program Director
- $80 application fee
- Proof of insurance coverage
Financial Aid
University of Arizona participants who receive financial aid through the University of Arizona are able to apply their financial aid toward the cost of this program. Limited Travel Support Awards are available for University of Arizona students. Contact The Office of Study Abroad and Student Exchange for more information. If you are applying to this program from another institution, your university may have an inter-institutional agreement with the University of Arizona.
