(B 02.3) Sarava Meu Pai: Brazil's African Legacy VHS. This video investigates the impact of African culture on Brazil. From the earliest days of Portuguese colonization and the slave trade that brought West Africans to this hemisphere, Africans have managed to maintain much of their culture through music, dance and religion. Shows the centrality of West African religion to the afro-Brazilian experience, and how its ability to adapt to changing environments has been a source of strength for its devotees. 27 minutes

(B 04.1) Canudos Revisited  VHS (University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, Center for Latin America) Directed by Robert M. Levine, this video recounts the life of Antonio Conselheiro, the religious mystic who wandered through the Northeastern backlands of Brazil for twenty years rebuilding churches and cemeteries. It offers a new interpretation of the late nineteenth century Canudos War in Brazil. Included in this video are archival photographs as well as modern visuals of rural Brazil. 22 minutes. US/1990. 

(B 04.2) Chico Mendes: Voice of the Amazon  VHS (TBS) This documentary focuses on one of the leaders of the struggle for preservation of the Amazon rainforest, environmentalist Chico Mendes, who was killed during his activist campaign to save it from exploitation by industrialists and large landowners. 60 min.

(B 06.1-4) Decade of Destruction  (PBS Frontline) Four-part series that takes a look at the problems surrounding industrial and agricultural expansion in the Amazon River basin of Brazil. US/1990. Each part is 60 min.

(B 08.3) Central Station (Columbia Tristar) Two unlikely characters cross paths in Rio de Janeiro's bustling Central Station and become inextricably linked. When a young boy witnesses his mother's accidental death, a lonely retired schoolteacher reluctantly takes him under her wing. Initially distrustful of each other, the two form an uncommon bond as they venture from the city to Brazil's barren and remote northeast region in search of the boy's father. (B 08.4) Quilombo (New Yorker Video) Directed by Carlos Diegues,  this historical saga is a stirring fusion of folklore, political impact, and dynamic storytelling, realized in vibrant tropical colors and set to the pulsing beat of Gilberto Gil's rhythmic score. The story derives from fact: in 17th century Brazil, groups of runaway black slaves escaped to mountainous jungle strongholds where they formed self-governing communities known as Quilombos. (B 08.9) How Tasty Was My Little Frenchman VHS (New Yorker Video)  This delicious black comedy, set in the jungles of Brazil, tells the story of a French explorer who tries in vain to be accepted by the tribe of cannibals who has captured him. The tribe treats its prisoner better than you might think. They give him food, his own hut-even a wife. The Frenchman strives to learn the ways of the tribe, hoping to figure out a way to avoid his prescribed fate of being the main course of a ceremonial tribal dinner. Ultimately, despite coaching and encouragement from his young Indian bride, the Frenchman is  integrated into the tribe only by being eaten.A classic example of  Brazilian Cinema Novo, How Tasty Was My Little Frenchman tells a  uniquely tongue-in-cheek version of what happened when the

(B 11.1) Brazil in the 16th and 17th Centuries  VHS (Films for the Humanities) This program shows the early history of Brazil. The Portuguese were the first Europeans to arrive. Around 1529, sugar cane was imported, and black slaves were brought in from Angola to work the land soon after. Hoping to cash in on the sugar business and slave trade, the Dutch conquered the land late in the 16th century, calling it New Holland, but later lost it. 50 min. US/1991.

(B 16.1) Contact: The Yanomami Indians of Brazil (Realis Pictures) A portrayal of the Yanomami Indians-an isolated indigenous people in remote regions in Brazil's Amazon river-who have been adversely affected by the incursions of Brazilian gold miners and other industrial  interests. Considered to be the last major Stone Age culture in the Amazon, many of the Yanomami Indians have died from Western diseases from which they have little natural immunity. 30 min. US/1990. 

(B 16.2) Sting and the Indians  ("World in Action," A&E/Granada) -- Called by some "a charity built on promises that has failed to deliver," the Rainforest Foundation was an effort by rock artist Sting and others to draw attention to the plight of the indigenous peoples of Brazil's Amazon river basin. These indigenous tribes were in danger of being removed and dislocated from their traditional lands by the increased exploitation of the Amazon jungle. This video takes a close look at the Rainforest Foundation: its goals, its achievements and its failures in an attempt to respond to this human and environmental crisis. US/UK, 1990.

(B 16.4) The Last of the Hiding Tribes (Part 2 of 3):Return from Extinction VHS (Bullfrog Films) This film tells the remarkable recent history of the hiding Panara tribe, who are descended from a large tribe known in the 18 th century as the Southern Kayapo.They were attacked so often by the Portuguese that they were believed to be extinct.But they fled into the deepest part of the forest, and killed all strangers on sight.With extraordinary footage from the 1960s, we watch as Caudio Villas Boas, and his team from Brazil's Indian Protection Service, make the first patient attempts to contact the Panara before a planned development road exposes them to 'civilization'.Then, in site of Claudio's efforts, in the 1970s, the tribe is virtually wiped out by diseases contracted when roads open their lands to an influx of rubber tappers and gold diggers.With the aid of his brother Orlando, Claudio Villas Boas manages to fly 79 survivors out to the Xingu National Park.Now twenty years later, the Brazilian government has recognized the legitimacy of the Panara's claim to a part of their ancestral homeland, and they are going back home.50 minutes (2 parts for classrooms: 22/29).1999.

(B 16.5) The Last of the Hiding Tribes (Part 2 of 3):Fragments of a People VHS (Bullfrog Films) In 1983 four member of the Ava-Canoeiro tribe-three women and a man, lawi-were contacted by a settler in the Sera de Mesa and taken into care by Brazil's Indian Agency.They were, it became clear, the survivors of a horrific massacre in their village in 1962.For twenty years the four hid in the mountains, taking refuge in a succession of remote caves, hunting silently, and stealing food from the settlers.Only one of the women, Tuia, was of child-bearing age, and aftera few years she gave birth to twins-a boy and a girl.But unless another group of Ava-Canoeiro, rumored to out in the scrubland, can ba contacted to provide potential mates for the two children,the tribe, descendants of runaway slaves from the once fears Carijo tribe, is doomed to extinction.The film chronicles the frantic efforts by the Indian Angency's Department for Unknown Peoples to find the missing group before their ancestral lands are drowned by a massive hydro-electric dam.50 minutes (2 parts for classrooms: 23/28). 1999.

(B 16.7) The Rainy Season  VHS (LAVA: Latin American Video Archives) A daily chronicle of the shaninka community during the rainy season recorded on video during a workshop in a village on the Amônia river in the state of Acre.The involvement among the film makers and the Ashaninka community makes the film go beyond a mere description of activities, reflecting the rhythm of the village and the humor of its inhabitants. (B 21.1) Forbidden Land  (PBS Frontline) -- This documentary directed by Helena Solberg investigates the role of the Catholic Church in modern Brazilian society, focusing on issues of land reform, the 
"preferential option for the poor," and liberation theology. The involvement of the clergy in the conflict over land ownership illustrates the Church's own internal struggle between conservative and progressive factions. 60 min. US/1990. 

(B 22.1) Child Killers of Brazil ("World in Action," A&E/Granada) This documentary examines the murders of street children in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The street children, many of whom are criminals, are seen as dangers to the tourism industry. Businessmen, to protect their interests, hire death squads comprised of bandits and corrupt policemen to clean the streets of them. Contains graphic scenes of violence. Viewer discretion is strongly advised . US/UK.1991.

(B 22.2) Santa Marta: Duas Semanas No Morro - Brazilian documentary directed by Sergio Goldenberg. Explores life in the shantytown slum (favela) of Santa Marta in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The residents of Santa Marta took an active part in producing this video. Among topics addressed are drugs, race relations, and celebrations in the favela. Portuguese with no subtitles. 50 min.
