Course Descriptions  

PORT 101:  (4 Units) Elementary Portuguese I
Communicative approach.  Recommended for students with no previous experience with Portuguese or any other Romance Language.

PORT 102:  (4 Units) Elementary Portuguese II
Communicative approach.  Prerequisite: PORT 101 or permission from the department.

PORT 200: (4 Units)  Intermediate Portuguese
Intermediate course for students who have taken the first year of elementary Portuguese.  Prerequisite: PORT 102 or permission from the department.

PORT 305a:
(3 Units) Beginning Portuguese for Spanish Speakers
An accelerated course which emphasizes all language skills.  Prerequisites: Native fluency in Spanish or 3 years of college level courses in Spanish or permission from the department.

PORT 325: 
(3 Units)  Intermediate Grammar and Conversation
For intermediate students to enhance their linguistic abilities, and develop control of oral communication at advanced level by developing native-like discourse strategies.  Prerequisite(s): PORT 200, 305, or permission from the department.

PORT 403/503: (3 units)  Contemporary Luso-Brazilian and Lusophone African Literatures: an Introduction
Through an interdisciplinary approach, the students will be in contact with the contemporary literature produced in Brazil, Portugal and Lusophone Africa.

PORT 425: (3 Units)  Advanced Grammar and Writing
This is a composition course for students who control the basic structure of the language and need to develop control of written communication at an advanced level.  Prerequisite: PORT 325 or permission from the department.

PORT 350:  (3 Units)  Readings in the Literary Genres
Introductory course in literary reading and analysis based on texts from contemporary Luso-Brazilian literature.  Prerequisite: PORT 325 or permission from the department.

PORT 397/497: (6 Units) Portuguese Language and Culture
Offered only in Fortaleza, Brazil.  Recommended: one year of Portuguese or the equivalent. Prerequisite(s): PORT 102, 305, or permission from the department.

PORT 401/501:
(3 units) Luso-Brazillian Literature- 1900 
Description:  Overview of literary periods and introduction to the major literary figures of Portugal, Brazil and the Luso-African countries (Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique and Porto Principe) from the beginning of their literature to 1900.
Prerequisite(s):  PORT 350 or permission from the department.

PORT 430/530:  (3 units) Brazilian Civilization 
Description:  Broad survey of Brazilian culture. Thematic examination of some of the major cultural developments. Topics include: Brazilian music, Afro-Brazilian culture, the role of women in Brazilian society, Brazilian popular culture.
Prerequisite(s):  PORT 350 or permission from the department.
Identical to:  LA S 430.  May be convened with:  PORT 530.  Usually offered:  Fall, Spring. 

PORT 440/540: (3 units) Portuguese Phonetics and Phonology
Description of the sounds of Portuguese and its main phonological rules.  Contrastive analysis between Portuguese, English, and Spanish phonetic systems, aiming at improving the non-native speaker pronunciation.  Discussion of dialectal variation.  Prerequisite: PORT 325 or permission from the department.

PORT 449/549:  (3 units)  Brazilian Literature in Film
Presentation of the masterpieces of Brazilian literature and the great films based upon them, with emphasis on the contrast between cinema techniques and literary production. Prerequiste: PORT 350 or permission from the department.

PORT 399/499/599:
  I ndependent Studies in Portuguese
To be arranged on an individual basis. See the Department of Spanish and Portuguese for more information.

PORT 463/563: (3 units) Topics in Luso-Brazilian literature
This course may be repeated for credit when topics vary.  Topics cover theater, poetry, novel, short stories, etc. Prerequiste: PORT 350 or permission from the department.
