Joseph Casillas

jvcasill@email.arizona.edu

My name is Joseph Casillas and I was born in Phoenix, Arizona. On my fathers side, my family immigrated from Mexico three generations ago and I am a registered member of the Comanche tribe by way of my mother. After studying Psychology and Spanish Philology, I moved to Cádiz, Spain, where I taught English as a second language at a variety of different levels for around six years. I completed my M.A. in Spanish Philology with a concentration in linguistics at Middlebury College where I have been a student in both the Spanish School and the French School. I am currently studying Linguistics at the University of Arizona where I am also a GAT. My main interests are in experimental phonetics and syntax. I enjoy playing music, new technology, Casio watches and anything that has to do with “el andaluz”. I teach Spanish 343 in the Spanish for Heritage Learners Program. In this class we study Spanish phonetics and dialectal variation, both of which I consider essential in order to promote equality amongst the many varieties of Spanish. For this reason, I consider it a privilege both to teach this class and to participate in this program.
