ADVANCED SPANISH FOR HERITAGE LEARNERSDepartment of Spanish and Portuguese
The University of Arizona Will I learn about my cultural heritage in this class? How do I know if Spanish 333 is right for me?
Course Description This course is the fifth in the Spanish for heritage learners (SHL) program: SPAN 103, 203, 253, 323, 333 y 343. Learners can improve their oral and written discourse for use in academic and professional outlets. In a context where current events in Latin American and the US are discussed, students will learn advanced writing as a process, including practice with brainstorming, planning, outlining, drafting, revising, and editing. The following writing pieces will be covered: the essay, the argumentation, and the research paper. Students are highly encouraged to investigate topics relevant to their academic specialties. In addition, students will also practice Spanish for use in professional contexts by doing activities such as writing letters, memos, and giving professional presentations. Grammar and spelling will only be covered based on the specific needs of each course. TOPAre Spanish 330 and 333 the same? No! Spanish 330 is for foreign language learners (students who have learned Spanish in the classroom). Spanish 333 is for heritage language learners (students who have had contact with Spanish outside the classroom) or native speakers (students who grew up in a Spanish-speaking country. Spanish 330 and 333 are academic equivalents in the sense that they both fulfill the same requirement but they have different curricula. Heritage language learners are much better off taking a class that has been especially designed with their needs in mind and contains content that is of great interest to them. Spanish 330, for example, focuses on developing conversation skills for foreign language learners who have had limited opportunities to practice their oral fluency. TOPWill I learn about my cultural heritage in this class? All heritage language courses seek to deepen the students' knowledge of their cultural heritage by reflecting upon their own experiences and learn about Spanish-speaking countries' history, cultures, and literature. In this course, there is a special emphasis on learning about current topics and events taking place in Latin American and in the US. TOPHow do I know if Spanish 333 is right for me? This course is a requirement for Spanish minors and majors. Students take this class after completing Spanish 323 or after transferring the necessary prerequisites from another institution. When in doubt, please make an appointment with the program director to clarify all your questions. The program director's contact information is provided below:
