INTERMEDIATE SPANISH II FOR HERITAGE LEARNERSDepartment of Spanish and Portuguese
The University of Arizona Will I learn about my cultural heritage in this class? How do I know if Spanish 323 is right for me?
Course Description This course is a continuation of Spanish 253 and the fourth in the Spanish for heritage learners program: Span 103, 203, 253, 323, 333, and 343. It focuses on expanding the learners' academic proficiency in oral and written discourse while it promotes their critical thinking skills. In addition, this course reviews advanced grammar and orthography topics for students to strengthen their written abilities. TOPWill I learn about my cultural heritage in this class? All heritage language courses seek to deepen the students' knowledge of their cultural heritage by reflecting upon their own experiences and learn about Spanish-speaking countries' history, cultures, and literature. In this course, there is a special emphasis on learning about topics related to the cultures, literature, and history of Latin American countries. TOPAre Spanish 323 and 325 the same? No! Spanish 325 is for foreign language learners (students who have learned Spanish in the classroom). Spanish 323 is for heritage language learners (students who have had contact with Spanish outside the classroom) or native speakers (students who grew up in a Spanish-speaking country. Spanish 325 and 323 are academic equivalents in the sense that they both fulfill the same requirement but they have different curricula. Heritage language learners are much better off taking a class that has been especially designed with their needs in mind and contains content that is of great interest to them. Spanish 325, for example, focuses on teaching students to use grammatical structures in the language. Heritage learners or native speakers have already mastered how to use most of those structures. TOPHow do I know if Spanish 323 is right for me? This course is a requirement for Spanish majors and minors. Students take this class after completing Spanish 253 or after transferring the necessary prerequisites from another institution. When in doubt, please make an appointment with the program director to clarify all your questions. The program director's contact information is provided below:
