ORAL SKILLS FOR HERITAGE LEARNERSDepartment of Spanish and Portuguese
The University of Arizona What is the focus of the course? Will I learn about my cultural heritage in this class? What are the specific objectives of the course? Are Spanish 102 and 103 the same? Is this class for native speakers of Spanish? How do I know if Spanish 103 is right for me?
Who is this class for? Spanish 103 is the first of a series of courses for heritage learners (HL): SPAN 103, 203, 253, 323, 333, and 343. It fulfils the second-semester language proficiency. If you grew up in an environment where Spanish was spoken frequently and are oftentimes capable of understanding spoken Spanish but encounter considerable difficulties in producing the language, this is the right course for you. TOPWhat is the focus of the course? In this course you will develop your conversational skills in Spanish, expand your vocabulary, be introduced to the written language, and strengthen your listening skills in a positive and supportive environment. A main focus of the course is to help students build confidence to use Spanish in a wide range of social contexts. In addition, students will be introduced to the main linguistic varieties and cultural patterns of the Spanish speaking world with a special emphasis on the Spanish varieties and cultures in the US. TOPWill I learn about my cultural heritage in this class? All heritage language courses seek to deepen the students? knowledge of their cultural heritage by reflecting upon their own experiences and learn about Spanish-speaking countries? history, cultures, and literature. In this course, there is a special emphasis on learning about cultural topics related to Hispanic communities in the US. At the same time, students develop an appreciation for the cultural and linguistic variation present within the different Hispanic communities in the US. TOPWhat are the specific objectives of the course? Students who successfully complete the course requirements will emerge from the class:
Are Spanish 102 and 103 the same? No! Spanish 102 is for foreign language learners (students who have learned Spanish in the classroom). Spanish 103 is for heritage language learners (students who have had contact with Spanish outside the classroom). Spanish 102 and 103 are academic equivalents in the sense that they both fulfill the second-semester language proficiency but they have different curricula. Heritage language learners are much better off taking a class that has been especially designed with their needs in mind and contains content that is of great interest to them. TOPIs this class for native speakers of Spanish? No! No matter how you define it, a native speaker of Spanish usually receives language credits and is placed into more advanced language courses. TOPHow do I know if Spanish 103 is right for me? If you have been placed into this course through the language placement exam, this is probably the best class for you. If you think that you need to be in a higher-level course, please talk with your instructor. When in doubt, please make an appointment with the program director to clarify all your questions and if necessary, take another language placement exam. If you haven't taken a placement exam, you need to contact the program director before registering. The program director's contact information is provided below:
