Polis is a free online course kit developed through the U of A's
FCII (Faculty Center for Instructional Innovation). Polis allows
instructors to build interactive course web environments that have
the capacity to generate online lessons, quizzes, and asynchronous
discussions. Polis also allows instructors to create webliographies
and connects easily to on-line reserves. In addition, Polis also
provides interactive templates created for instructors to use in
teaching argumentation skills: Online Debate, Virtual Peer, One-minute

Functioning much
like a web-board or an asynchronous discussion list, Caucus allows
users to create, edit, and read notes posted by themselves and other
members of a discussion group. Caucus also allows users to post
in html or to actually upload files of any type, allowing groups
of individuals to share documents.

D2L enables instructors
to make a course website,
and upload files and assignments
into a password protected
course environment. Registered
students access the course
site and the materials through
a web browser. Instructors
can "design" the course site
to include a syllabus, calendar,
assignment sheets, external
links, and readings. D2L
has an internal email system,
and a sophisticated discussion
feature that works like
a message board and which
threads and archives messages.
Instructors can also incorporate
a virtual whiteboard or
a "chatroom" for online real-time
discussions and collaborations.
