Bienvenidos - Bem-vindos

Founded in 1917, the AATSP is the largest and most comprehensive organization dedicated exclusively to promoting the study and teaching of Hispanic, Luso-Brazilian, and other related languages, literatures, and cultures from Kindergarten through Graduate School. Through an exchange of pedagogical and scholarly information, the AATSP encourages heritage and second language study and supports projects to that end.

The officers of Arizona AATSP welcome current and new members to our website. We hope that through this venue you will be able to contact and communicate with other Spanish and Portuguese educators (K-16) in the state of Arizona.

Recently, the U.S. Senate passed a resolution that established 2004-2005 as the Year of Languages (YOL) in recognition of the critical educational, social, cultural and economic benefits that result when Americans gain proficiency in other languages.

AATSP, in conjunction with ACTFL, SWCOLT, AZLA, and PAL has a series of language events planned to celebrate the Year of Languages national initiative. We hope that local school districts, colleges and universities throughout the state will take it upon themselves to actively participate in the promotion of this important endeavor.

Please take advantage of the many language links and resources found on this website. Share the information with your colleagues and encourage any new educators to become familiar with AATSP and its many benefits. If you happen to come across any additional resources, please feel free to contact one of the AZ AATSP officers and we will make sure to include them. We hope to see you at the next Arizona language event!

AATSP MISSION

Since its inception in 1917, the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP) has promoted the study and teaching of Hispanic, Luso-Brazilian, and other related languages, literatures, and cultures at all educational levels. Through an exchange of pedagogical and scholarly information, the AATSP encourages heritage and second-language study and supports projects to that end.

MAJOR CURRENT FOCUS

The AATSP supports projects that provide an exchange of scholarly and pedagogical information related to the issues facing teachers and learners of Spanish and Portuguese—special needs of heritage learners, second language acquisition, service-learning, and articulation and collaboration among instructional levels. We aim to be a focal voice in the education of the Hispanic community that is rapidly becoming the largest ethnic population in the United States.
