Beginning the Program at the University of Arizona
Prerequisites
Master’s Degree (or Magister) with distinction in German/German Studies/German as a Foreign Language; high level of competence in English and German [Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) rating scale at] C1.
Emphasis/Major:
Literature/Cultural Studies or Linguistics/Applied Linguistics
Minimum of 39 units total. Students must complete a total of 33 units of course work in Literature/Cultural Studies and Language Studies, in addition to the Introductory Course (GER 508) and the required GER 579 course for GATs. See curriculum outline below.
Minor: One of the major subjects or external minor from cooperating departments
Literature/Cultural or Language Studies may be chosen as an internal minor specialization. If a student chooses Language Studies as a major specialization, the minor must be internal, i.e. Literature/Cultural Studies. External minors may be chosen from cooperating departments and programs for those students who choose Literature/Cultural Studies as a major specialization. For either option for the minor, a minimum of 9 units (or a minimum of 6 beyond the M.A.) must be chosen. More units may be required by the external minor department.
Language Requirement
Before taking the Comprehensive Examination, all students must demonstrate significant oral and/or literacy skills in a language other than English and German. Such skills may be demonstrated in one of the following ways:
- Complete 24 units in one language; the last course in the sequence must have been taken within five years of the comprehensive exam, and the student must have received a grade of A or B (or the equivalent) for the course;
- Complete an upper-level course in the third language (300 or above, and beyond the 4th semester/intermediate level or equivalent) with a grade of A or B (or the equivalent) within 5 years of the comprehensive exam;

- Complete a secondary or post-secondary degree successfully in the third language at an institution where that language is the language of instruction;
- Be a native speaker of a language other than English and German
* Evaluation reports provided by specialists familiar with the ACTFL guidelines and based on in-house examinations of oral proficiency and/or reading comprehension/translation may be used to demonstrate the student's language proficiency. For example, an in-house evaluation of the student's reading skills could be based on the student's translation of a text
