For undergraduate students in French (several levels). Based on the submission of one or several poems. Book Awards.

Albert Anavy and Frank M. Chambers Memorial Scholarships
For undergraduate seniors majoring in French who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and have expressed the desire to make a career teaching French. Special consideration will be given to students interested in pursuing a Master's degree in French/Francophone literatures or linguistics in the department. Candidates must be full-time students. Based on student record, as recommended by the faculty in French; subject to the approval of the Executive Committee of the Alliance Francaise de Tucson. Monetary awards (number and value vary).

Arthur H. Beattie Memorial Scholarships
For undergraduate juniors and senior majoring in French. Students must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.00 or better for all courses taken at the university level, and 3.50 for courses taken in French. They may participate in the maximum of two competitions, once as juniors and once as seniors. Based on an essay. Monetary awards (number and value vary).

Sydney B. Brown Memorial Scholarships
Awarded to the undergraduate senior with the best GPA in French, as recommended by the undergraduate adviser in French. Monetary awards (number and value vary).

Gesell Travel to France Award
For undergraduate students who wish to attend the Arizona in Paris summer program. The student recipient will be decided according to the following criteria. Need; the importance to travel to France in the student's course of study.
Destination; priority given to students interested in attending the Arizona in Paris program. Merit; the student's proven record of accomplishments and promise of future success.


Undergraduate or Graduate


Loyal A.T. Gryting Memorial Scholarships
For upper division or graduate students in French Literature who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and a real desire to make a career in French Literature. Candidates must be full-time students. Based on the recommendation of the Student Affairs Committee and Undergraduate Adviser in French (in the case of undergraduate students), or the Graduate Studies Committee (for graduate students). Subject to the approval of the faculty as a whole. Monetary awards (number and value vary).

Charles Rosenberg Memorial Scholarships
For French majors who would have difficulty in continuing their studies without the scholarship. Based on the recommendation of the Student Affairs Committee and Undergraduate Adviser in French (in the case of undergraduate students), or the Graduate Studies Committee (for graduate students). Subject to the approval of the faculty as a whole. Monetary awards (number and value vary).

Summer Program in Paris
1 (preferably 2) GAT's per year are selected. Selection is in the Fall of the previous year. Students apply for consideration and then selection is based on oral interviews.

GAT Exchange with Paris VII
Two Masters/PhD candidates are selected as "applicants" and the final decision is made by Paris VII in March.

National Level

Concours National de l'Alliance Francaise
Undergraduate students in French at the UA and Pima College may participate. This contest is announced and proctored annually by the faculty member in French who serves as Liaison with the Alliance Francaise of Tucson. Highly competitive. Based on essays (two categories). Contestants must be non-native speakers of French and may not have won previously. Dates, topics and winners are selected by the Federation Nationale des Alliances Francaises in Washington D.C. Awards may include trips to France, monetary awards and (mostly) books. Winners are usually announced by mid- or late May.
