Registration Information

CLP courses meet the UA language requirement.

We are able to offer flexible schedules with 4-7 students per section, and offer 4 credit hours (elementary and intermediate levels). Students who are interested in our non-traditional tutorials should contact CLP at 621-3387 for further registration information.

Important: Tutorials are scheduled around the student's schedule at the CLP office and will be available the first week of class.

It is important that you call the office to give us your class and work schedules as early as possible.

All scheduled tutorial times are final.

Fees
CLP is instructionally self-supporting. There is a supplementary fee of $260; some scholarships are available in selected languages.

All CRL fees must be paid for the current semester no later than the end of the third week of classes for that semester.

Refunds

A 100% (one-hundred percent) refund is avaliable within the first week of classes.

An 80% (eighty percent) refund is available within the second week of classes.

By the end of the second week of classes students should notify the Program Coordinator if they wish to discontinue study in the program. After such time, we cannot guarantee a refund of the supplementary fee.

Attendance
A basic aspect of tutorial self-instructional language study is daily preparation for active participation in all tutorial sessions.

Students meet two times a week in small tutorial sessions (from 4 to 7 students) with target-language speakers who serve as "Tutors" for the target language. During these sessions the text/tape materials are personalized and structurally reinforced.

Tutors are not instructors. Instead they lead students through intensive practice in structures and vocabulary of the current and previous lessons. They also provide correction of errors and encouragement.

Attendance at the bi-weekly tutorial sessions is mandatory.

More than a maximum of three absences during the semester will result in an automatic drop.

A student with two absences will be required to meet with the Director.

In the event of an absence, the student is responsible for the material to be reviewed in the following tutorial session.

Materials
The daily use of audiocassettes in tutorial self-instructional language learning is the most important component in acquiring skill in the spoken form of any language. Tutorial session reviews and the final exam reflect the central importance of effective use of audio-tapes.

Each student is expected to devote at least twelve hours a week of work with audiotapes and studying the week's lesson.

Texts and tapes for all Critical Languages courses are required and must be purchased within the first week of tutorial meetings. Texts for all courses are available in the ASUA Campus Bookstore.

Required tapes for each course are available from the ASUA Campus Bookstore at the "Textbook Counter" on the lower level.

Advising
Students in need of advising, whether academic or administrative, should speak with the Director of the Critical Languages Program, Dr. Alexander Dunkel, or the Program Coordinator, Ms. Shirley McDowell.

Advising is not provided by the tutorial staff, except when specifically authorized by the Director or Coordinator.

Any required signatures must be those of the Director or Program Coordinator.

All students requesting a "Drop/Add" (Change of Schedule) must receive permission only from the Program Director or Coordinator. Failure to adhere to this procedure may result in serious administrative error (e.g., incorrect grade or enrollment status).
