Volume 5 (2009) of the journal Connections. European Studies Annual Review, the official publication of the Rocky Mountain European Scholars Consortium, contains the conference proceedings of the organization’s fifth annual conference held on the campus of the University of Arizona in October 2008. Four graduate students in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese have articles in the issue, presented in sessions on European space and culture organized by Professor Malcolm Alan Compitello, Department Head. Sohyun Lee published “A Long Way to Reality: Going Home with El tren de la memoria,” Susan Divine authored “Science Fiction as Strategy of Resistance in Contemporary Peninsular Narrative,” Matthew P. Smith penned “The Spanish Civil War in Novelistic and Film Versions of El lápiz del carpintero” and Araceli Masterson-Algar contributed “Madrid: Migrants’ Place in the MetroCity.” All four articles were drawn from chapters of dissertations directed by Professor Compitello and defended last year. In spite of a difficult job market the four students have found tenure system positions, keeping up the Department of Spanish and Portuguese’s 100 percent placement record of its PhD graduates. |
