Book Signing is Homage to Lanin A. Gyurko

 

Spanish Professor Lanin A. Gyurko was honored by colleagues and former students at a reception held at the Science and Technology Park site of University of Arizona South.

Dr. Ruth Claros Kartchner and Dr. Ruth Hjelm planned and hosted a book signing called “Homage to Lanin A. Gyurko,” for Studies in Honor of Lanin A. Gyurko. There were over 60 attendees at the event, most of them alumni of the University of Arizona’s Department of Spanish and Portuguese. Many of the attendees had contributed chapters to the book. The event program consisted of remarks by a panel of key contributors and supporters of the book and passionate statements of gratitude by former students addressed to Prof. Lanin Gyurko. Dr. Darla Brown, Director of Pima County Operations, was present to welcome the distinguished group of professors and alumni.

Dignitaries at the event and key speakers included Dr. Lanin A. Gyurko, Professor of Spanish and Portuguese and recipient of the Orden de los Descubridores Award, given by Sigma Delta Pi, the Hispanic National Honor Society; Dr. Malcolm Compitello, Chair of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Arizona; Dr. Miguel Méndez, author of the forward section of the book and Professor Emeritus of the UA Department of Spanish and Portuguese; Dr. Ken Hall, co-editor of the book and Professor of Spanish and Chair of the Department of Foreign Languages at East Tennessee University; Dr. Ruth Claros-Kartchner, chapter contributor for the book, Associate Professor of Spanish and President of the Faculty Forum at the University of Arizona South; and Dr. Ruth Muñoz-Hjelm, co-editor of the book, Instructor of Spanish, and former Director of the Languages Program at the University of Arizona South; Dr. Tom Lathrop, Founding Editor of Juan de la Cuesta Publishing and Professor Emeritus of the University of Delaware; and Dr. Raúl Saba, Associate Director and Associate Research Social Scientist, Center for Latin American Studies.
