The Association of Departments of Foreign Languages (ADFL) held its summer seminar west at the Westin La Paloma Resort and Spa from June 25-28th. The event was hosted by the College of Humanities. Each summer the ADFL, an affiliate organization of the Modern Language Association MLA and the largest organization of department heads of foreign language programs in the country hosts two seminars, one in the east of the United States and one in the west for departmental administrators. The Tucson gathering brought together some 60 heads and other departmental administrators for a series of keynote addresses and panel discussions on a variety of topics including the chair and the law, development, the changing landscape of higher education and chairing in a time of budget recession. Participants also had the opportunity to visit the Center for Creative Photography and the Southwest Pottery Project at the Arizona State Museum and were the guests of the College of Humanities for a reception at the University of Arizona Poetry Center. |
