How you can support the College of Humanities
The College of Humanities is committed to developing private support for its outstanding research, teaching, and service activities. To sustain its commitment to excellence, the College must recruit and retain the best faculty members available, provide the necessary support for their work, and attract the best undergraduate and graduate students.

There are many ways – large and small – to help support the work of the College of Humanities , from volunteering to assist with activities such as the annual Language Fair or community literacy programs to providing much-needed financial support for our development priorities.

If you would like more information about any of the opportunities described below, please contact Pat Brooks, Interim Director, Development & External Affairs, at (520) 626-4319 or

Student Support
The College of Humanities seeks endowment funds to provide increased financial support for deserving students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Although the value of humanities scholarship funds had doubled by the end of Campaign Arizona in July 2005, there is still substantial unmet need. The newest College-wide undergraduate scholarship initiative is a series of Cesar Chavez Scholarships for entering students that can be renewed yearly, as students make satisfactory academic progress. Funds are sought to support a third-year of this initiative. Graduate fellowship endowments and multi-year commitments are of particular importance because traditional humanities funding sources do not routinely provide support for graduate students like that available in the sciences and social sciences. Privately endowed fellowships are crucial to the College's ability to attract and retain exceptionally talented graduate students. In addition to fully endowed fellowships, one-year dissertation fellowships and other graduate scholarships are also priorities. Undergraduate Study Abroad Scholarships are especially sought to permit students in various humanities departments and programs to participate in the University's international programs around the world, including internships and apprenticeship programs. Other undergraduate scholarships may support the recruitment and retention of especially promising students of languages, literatures, and cultural studies-including students from underrepresented groups. Support is also sought to increase the University Writing Center endowment established by Luda and Donald Soldwedel to provide stipends for students working as peer consultants at the Writing Center , a learning center that serves the entire student population of the campus.
Faculty Support
With six Regents' Professors and four University Distinguished Professors having already been named among its faculty ranks, the College of Humanities stands ready to work with donors interested in establishing the first Endowed Chair or Endowed Distinguished Professorship in Humanities at The University of Arizona. Endowments are also sought for several faculty development and support programs designed to encourage junior and senior faculty to involve students in their ongoing research and its applications. Endowments are also sought for a Humanities Curriculum Development Institute that would provide summer stipends to bring together 10-12 faculty members each year to develop new courses of study in the humanities and for a new Instructional Technologies and Courseware initiative to provide support for faculty in adapting the latest instructional technologies to the teaching and learning of languages and the humanities. The new instructional and learning technologies promise great opportunities for faculty and students to collaborate and learn together.
Department and Program Endowments
In order to strengthen the permanent financial resources of the departments and programs in the College of Humanities , endowment funds are sought for each department and program. Earned income from these endowments is used at the discretion of department heads and program directors, in consultation with faculty and staff, to provide financial support for a variety of activities that enhance the lives of the departments and programs.
The Community Partnership Endowment
This endowment will establish a permanent base of financial support to assist the ongoing work of several key partnership efforts with K-12 schools, community groups, and arts and humanities organizations.

Established in 1978, the Southern Arizona Writing Project was named an "exemplary affiliate" by the National Writing Project in 1995. For more than two decades, the Writing Project has been working to improve the teaching and learning of writing across the curriculum at all grade levels, with hundreds of teachers.

The Partnership Across Languages (PAL) is a K-16 coalition of Pima County educators and parents committed to improving language learning and teaching. Founded in 1994 and based in the College of Humanities , PAL was named a mentor project in the Modern Language Association's national "High School to College" articulation project in 1996.

Staff Support
Staff members are frequently the first point of contact that students have with the University. The professionalism and skills of the classified staff are crucial in providing "a premier University experience." An important point of consensus in the College of Humanities is that there is an urgent need to provide more systematic financial support for the continuing education and professional development of the College's classified staff members. At least $25,000 per year is required for the College's 72 staff members. Giving and naming opportunities for endowments recognizing the contributions of longtime staff members are available. Contributions to individual department and program endowments will also strengthen the financial resources available for this important priority.
A New Home for the Poetry Center
The Poetry Center is one of the best examples at The University of Arizona of a program founded by a private gift that has grown to national renown through a partnership of private philanthropy and public dollars. Founded in 1960 by writer and editor Ruth Stephan, the Poetry Center has become a unique landmark on the national literary map. No other literary center in the United States matches the Poetry Center 's unique combination of offerings:
  • An outstanding library collection of 50,000 works supported by an acquisitions endowment of $1.2 million
  • A distinguished reading series that has featured 1,000 emerging and established writers Academic support of both undergraduate and graduate programs, including the University's nationally ranked Creative Writing Program
  • Writing workshops in schools, prisons, and community centers
  • Residencies for visiting writers
  • Special exhibitions, artistic and cultural events

The new 17,000 sq. ft. Poetry Center will finally provide a worthy home for what has become, over the past four decades, one of the nation's pre-eminent centers for the literary arts. Construction begins in the spring of 2006. The new Poetry Center will also provide a permanent home and dedicated meeting space for the Humanities Seminars Program. This project has been the highest priority of the College of Humanities for Campaign Arizona . Of the Center's $6.8 million cost, $4.9 million is being sought from private sources.

How to Make a Gift
Gifts to support the work of the College of Humanities can be made either to The University of Arizona Foundation or to The University of Arizona. To discuss the possibilities listed below, please contact Pat Brooks, Interim Director, Development & External Affairs, at (520) 626-4319 or
e-mail pbrooks@email.arizona.edu

Gifts of Cash
Gifts of cash are quite common and very easy to make. Checks should be made payable to The University of Arizona Foundation or The University of Arizona with a note in the memo section specifying your intent to support the College of Humanities or a specific program, endowment or activity within the College. Credit card gifts can also be made by calling 520-621-4743.
Gifts of Securities
Gifts of appreciated securities, such as stocks, bonds, or mutual funds, can provide special tax advantages. These include a charitable deduction for the full fair market value of the gift and avoidance of capital gains taxes. Gifts can be made directly to The University of Arizona Foundation or to The University of Arizona by your broker. For more information, please call Pat Brooks at (520) 626-4319
Gifts of Real Estate
Gifts of homes, ranches, and other real property can provide the same tax advantages as gifts of appreciated securities. A debt-free property that has significantly increased in value may be transferred to The University of Arizona Foundation with the donor receiving a charitable deduction for the appraised value while avoiding capital gain taxes on the property's appreciation.
Commemorative and Tribute Gifts
Any gift may be designated in memory or honor of a friend or loved one. The family of the deceased, or person honored, will be notified of such gifts by the College and the department or program involved.
Gifts-in-Kind
Another way to support the College of Humanities is through gifts of tangible personal property. When a gift relates to the "charitable purpose" of the College the donor may be eligible for a deduction equal to the full fair market value.
Corporate Matching Gifts
Gifts of cash are quite common and very easy to make. Checks should be made payable to The University of Arizona Foundation or The University of Arizona with a note in the memo section specifying your intent to support the College of Humanities or a specific program, endowment or activity within the College. Credit card gifts can also be made by calling 520-621-4743.
Planned or Deferred Gifts
Although outright gifts provide immediate resources for current programs, deferred gifts build the College of Humanities for the future. Giving through estate plans or life income gifts is particularly desirable for those who would like to support the College with a significant gift that may not be possible during their lifetime.
Bequests by Will or Living Trust
The most common form of deferred or planned gift is a charitable bequest, made as a gift in your will. A will or living trust should be prepared with an attorney.
Life Income Gifts
Numerous tax and financial benefits may be realized with a "life income gift," such as a charitable gift annuity or charitable remainder trust. The donor makes an irrevocable gift of cash, securities or property and receives income for either life or a specified term of (1 to 20) years. When the term is completed, remaining funds go to support the College.
Charitable Lead Trusts
This type of charitable trust pays the College a fixed amount or percentage of an asset for a term of years. Thereafter, the assets are transferred to loved ones and applicable estate, gift and generation skipping taxes on the trust assets may be significantly reduced.
Gifts of Life Insurance
You may want to consider naming The University of Arizona Foundation/College of Humanities as the beneficiary of a life insurance policy. If the Foundation is named both the sole owner and irrevocable beneficiary, the contributor is eligible to receive an immediate charitable deduction for the policy's net cash value or the net premiums paid, whichever is less. Additional premiums paid may also be tax deductible.
Retirement Plan Gifts
Designation of The University of Arizona Foundation/College of Humanities as the primary or contingent (after a spouse) beneficiary of retirement plan assets can offer significant tax benefits since retirement accounts may be exposed to both estate and income taxes.
Retained Life Estate
You may generate a current income tax deduction by giving a home or ranch to the College of Humanities , while retaining the right to occupy, rent or otherwise use the property during your lifetime. The property will not be included in your taxable estate.
Deductibility
The University of Arizona Foundation is a "qualified charitable organization" and meets the standards and requirements of Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c)(3). Under this provision, all contributions are deductible for federal income tax purposes (subject to statutory limitations) and for federal estate and gift tax purposes. Gifts made directly to The University of Arizona are similarly tax-deductible
