The Dean of the College of Humanities supervises the selection of recipients for the five scholarships described below on the basis of letters of nomination from faculty and academic professionals. Selections by a committee appointed by the Dean will be announced in late April. Letters of nomination should address the criteria stipulated in the descriptions below and should be submitted with the completed application packet to the COH Dean’s Office, Room 345 Modern Languages Building by Monday, March 23, at 4:30 pm. - The David Evans and Lucille C. Nutt Scholarship provides support for UA students who attended high school in the state of Arizona for four years and graduated in the top 25% of their class. Students must be declared or enrolled in majors in the College of Humanities. The scholarship is limited to single individuals of good moral character with no dependents. Potentially renewable (by nomination each year) if the student maintains no less than a 3.0 cumulative grade point average and completes no fewer than 16 units per semester. Recommendations of recipients are subject to approval by the Office of Student Financial Aid. For FALL 2009, two awards of approximately $2000 each will be made. Download
- The Mary Ann Farman Memorial Scholarship provides support for an undergraduate woman student in any degree field offered by the University of Arizona. Selection is made on the basis of cumulative GPA, a statement of educational goals by the candidate, and a letter of nomination by a faculty member who can comment on the student’s academic work, goals, and character. Recommendations of recipients are subject to approval by the Office of Student Financial Aid. The amount available for a single award for FALL 2009 is approximately $1200. Download
- The Misto-Ertz Scholarship provides support for deserving students studying art, art education, and the romance languages at the University of Arizona. The Departments of French & Italian and Spanish & Portuguese may nominate recipients for selection by the UA Alumni Association by sending nominations to the address listed above. Two awards of approximately $1500 each will be given for the Spring 2009. Recommendations of recipients are subject to approval by the Office of Student Financial Aid. Download
- The Van de Verde Memorial Scholarship provides support for upper-division majors in Humanities departments and programs who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and promise. Candidates may be nominated by faculty members in any University department; additional letters of support may be solicited but are not required. Selection by the committee appointed by the Dean of the College of Humanities is subject to approval by the Office of Student Financial Aid. For FALL 2009, four awards of approximately $1500 each will be given. Download
- The Werner Schirmer Memorial Scholarship provides support for an upper-division student with demonstrable financial need who is planning to enroll in a summer Study Abroad program or other UA-sponsored summer student program in Europe. For SUMMER 2009 the award will be approximately $400. The student must be a major in a Humanities department or program. Selection is made on the basis of financial need, cumulative GPA, a statement by the candidate about the goals of the intended course of study, and a letter of support from a faculty member who can comment on the student’s academic performance, goals in studying abroad, and personal characteristics.
