The Mamie Bernard and Pedro Joab Aguirre Scholarship in Spanish

Source: An endowment established by means of gifts from members of the family of Mamie Bernard Aguirre (1844-1906) and Pedro Joab Aguirre (1908-1982).  Mamie Bernard Aguirre was an educator, and one of the earliest public school teachers in Tucson.  She was the first Head of the Spanish Department at the University of Arizona.  Pedro Joab Aguirre, grandson of Mamie, was born in Tucson, Arizona.  He spent the majority of his life as a successful businessman in the Mexicali Valley of Baja, California, Mexico and the Imperial Valley of California.  He had a life-long dedication to learning and in his own special way was an educator himself.

Eligibility: Upper division female students majoring in Spanish.  Recipients must be academically qualified and show extreme financial need.  Preference given but not limited to students who are returning to school.  Scholars are selected by a special committee of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese subject to the approval of the Dean of the College of Humanities and the Office of Student Financial Aid.  The committee is expected to take into consideration the candidates' possibilities of making a significant contribution to society.
