Promotion and Tenure

The University of Arizona Handbook for Appointed Personnel (UHAP) sets forth the official policy regarding the duties and responsibilities of faculty at The University of Arizona.

The guidelines for promotion and tenure UHAP 3.11 and the Faculty Senate-approved Recommendations: Criteria and Evaluation for Promotion and Tenure serve as a reference for the Dean's Advisory Committee (DAC) in the development of the College of Humanities' promotion and tenure standards in teaching, research, creative activity, service and outreach.

DAC develops procedures that are followed by all academic units in the college. Each department or program, in turn, develops local-level criteria that are appropriate to the disciplines of its faculty. COH faculty may obtain departmental information concerning the promotion and tenure process from their head or director.

The DAC overarching promotion and tenure documents are the COH Promotion and Tenure Criteria (PDF) and the COH Promotion and Tenure Procedures . (PDF)

Probationary Reviews for Tenure-Eligible Faculty and Continuing Status Faculty (3/6 year review cycle; 2/4/6 year review cycle)

In Fall 2003, the university started moving toward a three-year probationary review cycle to replace the two- and four-year review cycle. For probationary faculty on the three-year review cycle, the annual review now contains an assessment component addressing progress toward promotion and tenure/continuing status.

For more information on the third year review see UHAP 3.12.04 .

For tenure-eligible faculty still on the two- and four-year review cycle departments will continue to follow the relevant review process to be carried out by the departmental standing committee and the head or director.

UHAP 3.12.04 requires that a candidate be given notice when the matter of his or her renewal, nonrenewal, tenure and/or promotion arises, and that the candidate also be given the opportunity to furnish materials that he or she considers relevant to the decision.

Heads and directors are required by UHAP 3.15 to advise candidates in writing of their recommendation regarding renewal, nonrenewal, or promotion and tenure at the time the recommendations are forwarded to the next review level.

Within the college, all second-year, fourth-year and third-year reviews must be completed at the local level no later than December 15. By that date all heads and directors must forward the departmentally reviewed dossiers to the vice dean.

All third-year and fourth-year reviews, as well as promotion and tenure dossiers, are to be prepared in accordance with the Office of the Provost's guidelines concerning dossier preparation.

Preparation of Dossiers

Each April the Office of the Provost publishes annual guidelines and checklists in preparing promotion and tenure dossiers. It is the responsibility of departments and candidates to ensure that the dossier is prepared in full compliance with the guidelines.

The Vice Provost for Academic Affairs holds a workshop each spring designed to provide information to promotion and tenure candidates. The workshop explains the university's review process and offers guidance on presenting the promotion and tenure dossier.

All promotion and promotion and tenure candidates, heads or directors and appointed promotion and tenure committee chairpersons are encouraged to attend. A third-year or fourth-year candidate will also find this workshop helpful as he or she becomes acquainted with the dossier preparation requirements at The University of Arizona.

At the end of a current promotion and tenure cycle, the University Advisory Committee on Promotion and Tenure reports to the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs its recommendations for improvement of the university's promotion and tenure process. These recommendations also offer suggestions on how candidates can prepare a successful dossier.

Previous committee recommendations include University Advisory Committee May 2003
and University Advisory Committee May 2001 .

Other helpful resources for dossier preparation include A Short Guide to Evaluating Teaching (PDF) and Good Practice in Tenure Evaluation . (PDF)
