Annual Performance Review

The Arizona Board of Regents (ABOR) requires that faculty be formally evaluated on their performance every twelve months. The University of Arizona Handbook for Appointed Personnel (UHAP) sets forth university policy for faculty annual performance review. See the links below for an in-depth explanation of ABOR and UHAP policy.

The Vice Provost for Academic Affairs’ website provides further information on the annual performance review process.

COH Annual Performance Review and Post-tenure Review

The COH associate dean has oversight responsibility for facilitating through department heads and program directors the implementation of university and college academic policies and procedures for annual performance reviews and post-tenure reviews. The following documents for the current review cycle have been delivered to COH department heads and program directors and are posted here for online reference.

Effective July 1, 2003 all incoming tenure-eligible and continuing status eligible faculty are on a 3/6 year promotion and tenure review cycle at the University of Arizona. This process requires a less formal yearly promotion and tenure assessment as part of each tenure-eligible faculty member's annual performance review in all years except the third and sixth year. Each college is required to have a written, approved plan for providing college-wide “common elements” for this assessment component within annual review.

The COH Common Elements document is referenced below. Departmental Common Elements plans are available at the local level. Many COH units have their Common Elements plans posted on their websites.

Post-tenure Review Reporting and the Dean's Level Audit

The University Handbook for Appointed Personnel UHAP 3.10.01 refers to the Dean’s Level Audit for post-tenure review reporting. College deans are required to audit and file a report on the annual performance review post-tenure review process in their college. This audit is meant to determine the adequacy, fairness and integrity of the post-tenure review process. In the College of Humanities the Dean’s Level Audit is conducted by an elected faculty peer review committee. According to university procedures, the college-level audit is to be completed by September 15.

Timetable for the Dean's Level Audit

May 15 Department level annual and post-tenure reviews to be completed
May 30 Deadline for faculty members to appeal their annual evaluation
June 1 Audit committee can begin requesting faculty files from heads/directors
September 15 Deadline for audit committee to submit report to dean
October 1 Dean’s summary of audit outcomes due in Provost’s Office
