Funding Opportunities
for Graduate Students in Residence
The Department of Classics
has various forms of support for graduate students already inresidence.
(The next years incoming graduate students are considered as a part
of the application process, and no further action is required by them.)
These opportunities include teaching assistantships, occasional research
assistantships, positions as graders, and some work-study openings.
Step 1. Each February, as part of the annual planning cycle, the Head
of the department will contact all current graduate students who are in
residence at that time. The purpose of this communication is to ascertain
the students interests in particular forms of funding for the following
year.
Step 2. If a graduate student wishes to act as teaching assistant in a
particular course or to work with a particular faculty member, then that
student will contact the professor in question before responding to the
Head and making any specific request.
N.B.: Under the supervision of the Latin Program Director, qualified graduate
students may teach their own sections in the Basic Latin Program. A graduate
students experience and expertise are important considerations in
the assignment of Latin classes. Preference is given to qualified graduate
students in Philology, but qualified graduate students in Archaeology
are also encouraged to make their interest known to the Latin Program Director.
Application is made in the spring semester when all graduate students
inform the Department of their interests and needs for the following year.
As part of their teacher training, all Graduate Assistant Teachers (GATs)
must enroll in at least one LAT 5XX course each semester they are teaching
in the Basic Latin Program.
The department will not always be able to meet the graduate students
exact wishes, but it is our hope that this collaboration will make the
process both more open and smoother.
Step 3. All graduate students who receive this inquiry are expected then
to respond to the Head in writing by the date specified in the letter.
