For Thursday...

Read Convergences pgs. 1-5 and 36-44, including the chapter introduction, and the resume, photograph, and poem by Anne Sexton.

Write a two-page (double-spaced) response discussing the connections you find between each text, and how each contributes to your overall impression of Anne Sexton. Consider the contextual information and quotes included by Atwan in this section. Do they influence your impression of Sexton at all? if so, how? How might your impression of Sexton change if the contextual information and quotes, or one of the three texts were left out?

Create your self-portrait through a photograph, painting or other visual representation. Accompany your portrait with an explanation as to how the conventions available through the visual medium you chose contribute to your impression.

Discuss reading and present self-portraits to the class.
For Tuesday... Read Convergences pgs. 48-49, including "Bobland" by Robert Atwan, and visit the OldPuebloMOO spaces of Nojer (@join nojer) and Duff (@join duff). Pay close attention to the various ways all three have used spatial imagery/metaphor to capture aspects of their identities within the spaces they've created. Consider these questions:
  • How has the space been described? What aspects of the space stand out most?

  • How is the space organized?

  • How are objects and other descriptive elements used throughout the space and what conclusions can you draw about this person's character as a result?

  • With regard to the MOOspaces: What about the character/owner of the space...how is he/she/it/they described and what impression does that description give you of the character's self?

  • What is the overall impression you get of this character from his/her/it/their space and why?
Draft a MOOspace or a map of yourself. If a MOOspace, include what rooms and objects you might have, how you would arrange and describe them, and how each contributes to the impression of yourself you are trying to capture. If a map, determine the type and scope of the map; draw the map, making sure to include include a key, relevant landmarks, and other detail that will contribute to your impression.
