The Souls of Black Radical Folk:
W.E.B. Du Bois, Africana Studies, and Critical Social Theory

REILAND RABAKA
Reiland Rabaka is Assistant Professor in the Department of Black Studies at California State University-Long Beach.

This lecture will analyze W.E.B. Du Bois's life and thought for its contribution to Africana Studies and critical theory. Beginning with his biography and then turning to his socio-political philosophy, this discussion will explore Du Bois's four key contributions to Africana Studies and critical theory of contemporary society: - his anti-racist and critical race theory; critique of sexism, and particularly patriarchy; anti-colonial and (proto) postcolonial theory; and concept of a race-centered and racism conscious critique of capitalism. The lecture will also emphasize simultaneity in Du Bois's socio-theoretical framework by exploring some of the ways in which his unique social scientific method consistently called for a critical conjunctive engagement of important epochal issues.
