This lecture will analyze W.E.B. Du
Bois's life and thought for its contribution to Africana Studies
and critical theory. Beginning with his biography and then turning
to his socio-political philosophy, this discussion will explore
Du Bois's four key contributions to Africana Studies and critical
theory of contemporary society: - his anti-racist and critical
race theory; critique of sexism, and particularly patriarchy;
anti-colonial and (proto) postcolonial theory; and concept of
a race-centered and racism conscious critique of capitalism. The
lecture will also emphasize simultaneity in Du Bois's socio-theoretical
framework by exploring some of the ways in which his unique social
scientific method consistently called for a critical conjunctive
engagement of important epochal issues.
