The Africana Studies Community Advisory Council is called to promote the establishment of a firmly grounded program in Africana Studies at the University through the following measures:

  • Advising the University of Arizona in the area of recruitment and retention of faculty and students of color, particularly those of African descent.
  • Aiding in the cultivation of a strong and comprehensive Africana Studies curriculum.
  • Assisting in developing a network of experienced resource persons who are skilled in community leadership that could serve in a consultative capacity for advancing the program of Africana studies.
  • Helping to identify financial and educational resources for the Africana Studies Program for its eventual transformation into a full fledged department and offers a graduate degree within five years, and strengthening financial independence of the Program.
  • Progressively reviewing the work of the African Studies Program in the community via regular communication with the Director in order to ensure that the program’s goals are achieved.
  • Informing the Africana Studies Program of latest developments, activities, and issues in local, national and international communities that may be of significance to the expansion of Africana Studies, and the well being of African-American people generally.
